Garden of Gethsemane original acrylic plein air landscape painting
11" x 14" acrylic on panel, by American Artist Hilary J. England
This romantic fine artwork was painted on-site, in Israel, in the Garden of Gethsemane, during the Easter holiday week of 2019.
The day was gray and somber -- the rain and wind had driven many people away, and I was able to sit in the garden and paint this artwork. I meditated on all that had happened here -- the anguish of our Lord, as he faced crucifixion, his loneliness as his friends slept during his distress, and the trees that kept him company -- the olive trees in the grotto -- now twisted and gnarled with age -- had been young trees during that time, and were still alive, two thousand years later. It was a very spiritual painting session, to be sure.
The painting is signed front and back.
